Greece + Nervous System Regulation

Jersey City

June 13, 2025

Hi there!

I’m still a little jet-lagged from my amazing trip to Greece. It was last minute and unexpected, and I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to go but I went and am so glad I did. I’ve travelled, but I’d never been to Greece. The weather was perfect, and the water was the most beautiful color of turquoise and so clear. And the food was so delicious. I discovered how much I really needed to step out of the current reality. My nervous system was functioning on overload. I was more stress than I realized.

This trip was a yoga retreat, so in addition to food and sun and beautiful beaches I was also stretching and meditating for several hours a day. All of this had a positive effect on my nervous system.

When you’re in a state of constant stress your body is out of balance. This can affect sleep, digestion and mood. And not in a good way. However, the body is always trying to get back into balance. And we should take the time to help it. This is known as nervous system regulation. It’s the ability of the body to respond appropriately to stressors, both physical and mental, and to return to a state of calm and balance.

During menopause there is the decrease of estrogen which also affects the nervous system and can bring the body out of balance. Basically, during perimenopause and menopause, you have the normal stress of life plus the decrease of estrogen which can cause your nervous system to get totally out of balance.

The good news is that there are things that you can do (besides taking a trip to Greece) to bring back balance.

· Practice box breathing. The breath is an amazing tool that you can use anytime. Breathe in, to the count of 4 and out to the count of 4 and feel your body start to relax.

· Cuddle with your dog, cat or kid.

· Get a massage.

· Hum (yes this really works).

· Take a walk in nature. Go to the park.

· Listen to 528 Hz on Spotify or Pandora or wherever you get your music.

· Lay on the floor and put your legs up the wall.

· Don’t watch or listen to the news on repeat.

· Stop doom scrolling.

Pick one or two from the list and do them consistently. Let me know if you notice a difference. I think you will.

Be well,

Laura

And more...

· There are lots of yoga retreats and some of them are local. My trip was with Kim Larkin. Check her website for all the other retreats she offers.

· If you’ve ever thought about working with me but didn’t want to make a big commitment, I have the perfect solution. Sign up for my Menopause: What to Expect series. It starts this Monday and is live online. It’s one hour a week for 3 weeks. You’ll have my full attention and get to ask me all your questions. The price for the series is only $45. I made this exceptionally low so that price would not be an issue. Please let your friends and colleagues know about it too. I may do this again, but I don’t know when (and the price will most likely increase). So, sign up now!
