About Whales + Menopause

Jersey City

May 18, 2025

Hi there!

Did you know that whales go through menopause? Well, they do. There is, however, one very big difference between how a killer whale experiences menopause and how you and I experience menopause.

Killer Whales in menopause are seen and revered as wise women whales. In their whale community, they are brought to the head of the pod. They are given a place of authority and power. They are looked up to. They are made leaders, especially in times of stress. Amazing!

I think as a society we can learn a lot from killer whales. Let’s think what if.

What if when you reached menopause you were looked up to for your experience?

What if when you reached menopause you were recognized as a leader?

What if when you reached menopause you were sought out as a mentor?

How would that change the way you perceived menopause? I believe you would feel empowered. You could reach your full potential with the support of your family, and colleagues.

I also believe it’s time to change the narrative around menopause. We are finally talking about it and that’s a good thing, but the conversation is often focused on the negative aspects of menopause. The symptoms and the limitations that come with them.

Let’s keep talking about it but let’s start talking about the power that comes with menopause. Let’s remind ourselves and society that women in menopause have so much to bring to the table. We have years of experience in the workplace.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

If you think this is interesting, let’s continue this discussion at one of the JC Menopause Meet Ups.

Be well,

Laura

And more...

· This is a fascinating TedTalk on menopause and she mentions the killer whales.

· In two separate conversations friends mentioned novels that had menopause themes. I haven’t read them yet but I’m going to the library this week and will check them out. It’s almost time for summer reading so… Give them a go and then let me know. “Sandwich” by Catherine Newman and “All Fours” by Miranda July. This last one has gotten a lot of press.

· I interviewed several women about their menopause experience and there was a common thread running through every conversation I had. There is not enough information. We wish we had known more. So, I’ve decided to offer a 3 Part Class, “Menopause: What to Expect”. The class will be on 3 consecutive Mondays in June from 7pm to 8pm EST. The dates are June 16th, 23rd and 30th. I’m offering this at a super low cost because I want it to be accessible. If you are starting perimenopause or are in perimenopause and want to know what to expect, please sign up. And be sure to tell your friends and colleagues. You can sign up on my website: https://www.lauralacey.com/menopause-what-to-expect
