Mirror Mirror on the Wall…

Hi there!

Mirrors, as we know them, were not a thing until the 17th century. Before that people saw their reflections in polished obsidian, bronze, or copper. The images were distorted. It wasn’t until glass mirrors were discovered that reflections became “true.”

Can you imagine a world without mirrors? Would we be as obsessed with body image if we couldn’t see our reflection? Interesting thought.

As a peri-menopause health coach, I work with women who have a variety of symptoms. However, no matter what the symptom is, there’s almost always the underlying concern about weight gain.

We women are shape shifters. Our bodies change over time. They change during adolescence and again during pregnancy. Even after you lose the baby weight your body is different. You may be the same size, but things have shifted. Your body isn’t the same as pre-baby. And then comes perimenopause and your body changes again. You’re gaining weight for no apparent reason. It can be frustrating, for sure.

We look in the mirror and check the scale and both confirm what we already know. Our bodies aren’t the same as they were a few years ago.

Weight gain in menopause is different. You can lose weight but not by eating less and working out more. That worked 15 years ago but, no more. During menopause, weight gain is caused by decreasing hormones and insulin resistance. Of course, calories play a part but not as much as before.

Call me if you want help with this. 201-927-0648. You can be the happiest and healthiest version of yourself. It’s totally possible!

Here’s a little homework assignment.

· Be kind to yourself

· Make health a priority

· Acknowledge all the positive things in your life

And put a smiley face sticker on your bathroom mirror that says, “Damn you look good!”

Have a great week!

Be well,

Laura
